The Ninth Life of Louis Drax (Book Review) - Good Read

To be really honest I did not know that this book existed and I am not really surprised why. In ordinary circumstances, like say, I had come across this book in a bookstore, I might not have picked it up, unless of course it had a great discount or an attractive cover maybe. I would have thought "ennnn not my kind of book". So why you might ask did I even pick this up.

Well the answer is "Drum roooolllll" Jamie Dornan (Hearts, flowers, Swoon and I am back....I could not resist the picture). I knew Jamie Dornan from "The fall" which I started watching because of Gillian Anderson(the X-files for the people who live in the rocks). I fell in love with Jamie and the character. I know that makes me a psycho because he plays the bad guy. But I think the thin line that he has managed to achieve to get people to hate and love the character is tremendously commendable.

So being a Jamie Fan I have watched Fifty Shades of Grey (I hate the book and tolerated the movie multiple times only for him). I was curious to see what other projects he has signed which will be hopefully released in India where I live (Fifty shades was not and yes I watched the downloaded version). He has signed 2 other movies (Other than the Fifty Shades franchisee) one of which is the title of the blog.

So moving to the main hero of this blog when I read the synopsis of the movie it intrigued me. I liked what I read and was debating on whether I should buy the book. It was available on Amazon I think, but I was not sure whether I should actually spend money on the book. Also the better half has threatened to move out of the room if I buy anymore books other than those that I absolutely need. In my defense the rooms in cities are small. Luckily for me there was a library copy available albeit in a different city, but they are nice people and ship books.

This is the story of a young boy by the name of Louis Drax. He stays with his mother and father and they are a normal family. His father is a pilot for Air France and his mother stays at home with him because he is quite accident prone and disturbed.  His parents take him on a picnic one day and he falls off a cliff into a ravine and dies. He is taken to the morgue but one of the tech's notices that the boy has suddenly started breathing. However he is comatose and shifts hospitals so that he can be cared for by Dr Pascal Dannachet who is a "coma specialist" (Played by Jamie in the movie). His treatment progresses and the good doctor gets involved with Louis and his mother in ways that are more than ideal. Because of this the other patients in his care and his personal life suffer. But despite all his good intentions he fails to realize that he is being played with and almost loses his life and the reputation that he has so carefully built. Disclosing anything more than this will be a spoiler so I will leave it to you to read the book or watch the movie.

The story is told from the point of view of 2 characters, Dr Pascal and Louis. I liked the monologues of Dr Pascal, but with Louis the narrative was quite disjointed and child-like. I somehow did not enjoy it. Other than this little problem which I had, it is quite a good book and Liz manages to grab your attention throughout. Even if I was busy with other tasks I used to look forward to continue with the book, though yes, I was tempted to skip the parts in which Louis was describing some of the things on his mind. I would recommend a buy for this book, but wait till the movie comes out. I am sure that the book will go into reprint and you can buy it cheaper and maybe as a bonus with Jamie on the cover. As for me I will not buy the book but will definitely watch the movie once it is out and for posterity will try to have the movie on my computer (for Jamie of course).

Till next time...

Rating: 4.5/5

Level: Easy Peasy. It is not a very difficult book and most of the characters are not  complicated.

P.S: I am currently starting David Baldacci's "Memory Man". I will make sure I write a review for that.
