Bad reading week - All in one review.....
Book Name: Made in America, The Gemini contenders, I've got your number, Chronicle of a death foretold, Eleanor and Park
Authors (In order of the books listed: Bill Bryson, Robert Ludlum, Sophie Kinsella, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Rainbow Rowell
Pages: Who knows really
How long it took me to read: A week, if you are ready to sacrifice your sleep, else maybe 2-3 weeks
Plot Summaries of all the books:
Made in America: This book chronicles the beginning of USA as a country. It traces the journey of the settlers, how thanksgiving came into being and various other stories. Though the information provided in the book is quite detailed in lacked the humor that Bill is known for.
The Gemini Contenders: Typical Robert Ludlum. It's a thriller based on some documents that a group of monks hide and then commit suicide. The rest of the story is about one Vittori Fontini-Cristi the only one who escapes when his entire family gets massacred. The story is about how Vittori and then his sons have to continue to fight to protect the document.
I've got your number: Girl engaged to boy. The boy's family is well educated (Phds if you might). They do not like his choice of bride (for some obscure reason like she is not highly educated or some such). Girl then loses her engagement ring which is a priceless heirloom that belongs to the boy's family. Then her phone gets robbed and she finds a phone in a dumpster (Yes, you read that right). This phone belongs to the PA of a billionaire (Read Christian Grey) and the billionaire calls the phone to talk to his PA(obviously) and so on and so forth. Ultimately boy and girl live happily ever after but separately. It had its sweet moments but did not hold that much water for me. Maybe I am weird.
Chronicle of a death foretold: Santiago Nasar is murdered. The story is told from the point of view of a journalist who is interviewing people to find out the circumstances under which Nasar was murdered. The interesting part of the book was that even though the entire village knew that he was going to get murdered and his murderers nobody tries to warn him or stop them. It was a very interesting premise and I have heard great things about the author.
Eleanor and Park: Unrequited love story. Nothing more to say.
What I thought:
Made in America: I love Bill Bryson. His writing style is humorous. I have always enjoyed his writing. There are instances when I have laughed out loud much to the amusement and sometimes irritation of my fellow passengers. The book began very interestingly but towards the middle it got boring. I had to actually force myself to finish the book.
The Gemini Contenders: Robert Ludlum is my favorite thriller/mystery writer. I admit though that the only books I have read are from the Jason Bourne series. This book again failed to hold my interest. (maybe it was the condition of the book....I don't know). I never connected to the characters nor felt the thrill. Neither did I want to go back to the book or sacrifice my TV shows to finish the book.
I've got your number: Same author as the Shopaholic series. The book was just the same. It was like reading a rehash of all the Shopaholic books. Though I did not absolutely loved the book, it's nice to pick up in the middle of a reading slump. Also the book has good reviews on YouTube so I recommend you to give it a try. I am as usual one of the weirdo's who did not like the book.
Chronicles of a death foretold: I have heard a lot about "One hundred years of solitude" by the same author. But for some reason I never got to the point of picking the book. Finally however this book was delivered to me because the one I requested from the library was out. For some reason, which I cannot fathom, II did not like the story has much. However, once again, Good Reads has some very good reviews and it is actually a part of the syllabus for students who are doing the writing course. And apparently there is hardly anyone who did not like the story. So do give it a try. Once again weirdo.
Eleanor and Park: Rainbow Rowell the author of this book is very well liked on YouTube One of her books "Carry On" has received rave reviews from a million booktubers and so has this. But I as usual did not like it. I just felt like it was the same story that I had read a million times. Maybe I don't like contemporary fiction. However I recommend a read because of the rave reviews.
Yayyyyy or Naaayyyyy: Mixed feelings, would'nt you say
Rating: 2.5 stars on an average
Fun Fact: Nothing really.....just that my sense of humor has gone on a holiday today and I just can't seem to think of funny one liners to write. Maybe I should just do one book at a time.
On the other hand I have restarted my embroidery classes after a long gap (2 weeks) and I am very happy.
